SHARP OBJECTS BY GILLIAN FLYNN
This great, fun read is part VC Andrews and Brothers Grimm but still manages to be a literary novel and a thriller that will keep you reading and page-turning right up to it’s double-ending. It speaks to the violence between women and its many manifestations of intergenerational destruction. This book goes way over the top in parts but still manages to be a completely entertaining read. Does it sound like I loved it, because I really did.
The story follows Camille Peaker, one of my favourite female leads in any medium in years. This is one flawed lady. She drinks too much, has nasty thoughts and is fascinating. We don’t find out her major damage until around page 60 or so and its title-providing secret carried my interest in this character for the rest of the book.
Camille returns home to the town of Wind Gap, Missouri from Chicago as a reporter to write on the story of two girls, one missing and the other murdered. What follows is typical only of the thriller genre in that she gets to the bottom of things and finds out whodunnit. Otherwise, the book is wholly original with taut writing and exciting scenes.
Some director out there should get their hands on this book and make a great movie from it. If you’re looking for a great read, I strongly suggest Sharp Objects. Also, if you do decide to read it, I’d love to discuss it with you when you’re done. Seriously folks, this book rocked my world!
