Remember when these guys were doing their dorky feminist-y meets little girl meets dudesse-looks-like-a-dude electropop? Remember when they were trying to make the word electroclash happen? Like “fetch,” “electroclash” never happened but if this song doesn’t make you want to dance then something’s wrong with you.


Kathleen Hanna is one of my favorite vocalists and she rocks in this song. The whole back catalogue of Bikini Kill stuff is amazing and I can’t wait for her to revisit her late 90’s project Julie Ruin. I was surprised to see this song used in a Telus commercial a few years ago and wondered if this was a Canada-only thing. The Kathleen Hanna I know and love seemed like someone who would be adverse to selling a song to advertisers. Made me wonder if that only counts in the States.


Also, Kathleen Hanna was that chick that Courtney Love punched out at Lollapalooza 80 years ago and she also dated Kurt Cobain way before any of them were big. Kathleen wrote “Kurt Cobain smells like teen spirit” after a deodorant marketed at teen girls at the time on Kurt’s wall and that’s where the name of the song came from. Or so the legend goes.
