On My Night Table

CATCHING FIRE BY SUZANNE COLLINS

Book 2 of The Hunger Games Trilogy was definitely a sequel.  It takes the action laid out in the first book and expands and builds on it.  The world that was introduced becomes richer and the characters’ journeys are further revealed.  I was a little annoyed that there is a huge dangling plot-line at the end of the book (I would be really bummed if I was 14 and had to wait a year or two for the third book).
Katniss’ growing concern with her own and everyone she loves’ safety creates great conflict and magnifies the concerns a teen has with family and friends so her story becomes instantly relatable.  I really enjoy reading about such a capable young woman who while under horrific circumstances, rises to every challenge before her and questions everything around her. This is no passive teen girl waiting for a guy to save her.
We learn more about Panem politics and the machinations The Capitol puts her through and the position the outcome of the first book has put the main on the main characters.  I love the authority-challenging that happens in these books and I think they are a great jumping-off point for discussions with young people about power and privilege.
I look forward to read the further adventures of Katniss Everdeen. Also, I can’t stop saying the name, “Greasy Sae.”
