UNDERSTANDING IN A CAR CRASH BY THURSDAY
This song’s propulsive momentum and weird vocal were one of the early aughts best. Thursday went on to make music and are still touring, but this song is probably one my favorites by them. I love me a soft/loud sonic dynamic and this song has it. If you’re driving you’re gonna go faster, if you’re walking you’re gonna walk faster. The vocal has a sorta emo-wimpy singing mixed with a hoarse screaming. Nothing super fresh by now, but when this album was released on my birthday (narcissism alert) in 2001 it sounded like a revelation.
The way it starts with two drum beats and then that great angular guitar rocks my world. If it’s true that a band/artist only has two great albums in them, Thursday’s would be their first, Waiting and their second, Full Collapse. If you like this, check out more of their stuff.
