Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!

LITTLE RED CORVETTE BY PRINCE

One of the best lyrics in all of pop music is when the Paisley One sings, “I guess I should’ve known, she had a pocket full of horses, Trojans and some of them used.” Waaay back in Grade 7, this song served as my introduction to the Purple One. From that moment forward Prince had a string of hits and so many of those songs are classics today.

I always liked his songs in a “listening-to-the-radio” way, but recently, I did a YouTube survey of his music. During this I realized what everyone else already knows: The dude is a genius. I know that at that age I was too young to be aware of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix as they informed his style, stage show, and music. On the other side of things, it all seems clear. He pays homage with respect but was also doing something new and unlike his predecessors.

Also, if you’ve never seen Sandra Bernhard’s “Without You I’m Nothing,” you should totally see it if only for her slow melancholy story during this song which puts it in an Americana context in a way that is both hilarious and unexpected. And then, she strips down to a G-string and dances to the recording as only she can. Comedy Gold!

I guess I should’ve known by the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn’t last:

A body like yours oughtta be in jail ‘cause its on the verge of being obscene:
