On My Night Table
(THIS IS MY 400TH POST!)

THE PASSAGE BY JUSTIN CRONIN

I love a good horror novel and this one delivered. It took me forever to read, which I love because I love being immersed completely in another world and this sprawling vampire/post-apocalypse epic was close to great. If you liked The Strain or The Stand you’ll probably devour this book. The exciting thing is that it is the first of a trilogy.

The story opens a couple of years from now and centres on a military facility and a young girl who has been abandoned by her troubled mother. I became so focused on the story so imagine my surprise when the story jumped forward 100 years. Without giving too much away, the book takes a long, involved journey back to some of the characters we met in the first part.

This was the most well-written, literary horror book I’ve read. Cronin creates a world so fascinating that I was pulled in from the first page and almost couldn’t put it down until I was done. When I finished it, I discovered that the sequel, The Twelve will be released on October 16. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a series where I had to actually wait for the next book and the anticipation is fun.
