On My Night Table

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS BY SARA GRUEN

This book felt like a bad romance (want your bad romance) disguised as a literature.  I didn’t really love this book, but I managed to finish it and I can see how the movie would work and am almost curious to see it. If you like romance or have more than a passing interest in Circus Life in the 1920’s and 1930’s, then pick this one up. If you don’t then you’re probably OK skipping this one.
It’s your basic boy meets girl, girl is married, boy meets elephant, elephant is dumb (or is she?) story.  After reading the afterword, I was impressed by how much research the author appeared to do, and it made me appreciate the work more. I didn’t find myself feeling the old-time-y circus come alive in my imagination as much as I would have liked it to, and at times the book read like a script.
