Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!
TONIGHT, TONIGHT BY SMASHING PUMPKINS
When a pop song is about “tonight” it is usually pretty good. This one is excellent. It came along in the mid-nineties when everyone was too cool for school and was lush, orchestral and sincere in its lyrics. The strings add a huge wall of sound and this is one of the best Pumpkins songs. It builds and builds and sweeps you up with it.
The video pays homage to Georges Melies’ “A Trip to the Moon” and was a big hit at the time. Instead of my usual live/acoustic version of the song, I’ve decided to show Melies’ film so that you can compare the two. I imagine that in 1902 (!) people must have been blown away when they saw this.
