Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!
(50th OMGITLTS Edition)

DREAMING BY BLONDIE

For the 50th OMGITLTS, I chose a song that I have always loved and is in the Top Ten of my all time favorites. The 1, 2 - 1, 2, 3, 4 beat that starts out this song always gives me a little rush. When I was a kid and I discovered Blondie I thought they were the coolest things out there and Debbie Harry was a Goddess. I think that staring at the band on the record covers informed my personal esthetic in such a huge way. But the appeal went beyond style. In those innocent pre-internet days in my small city in Canada, this was the coolest thing I had seen so far. I listened to Parallel Lines daily at least once for about 2 years (sorry Mom). This comes from the follow up, Eat to the Beat.

All of what I imagined being grown up and in New York City was captured in this song. There is a yearning and an innocence about it that defied the times and this song still rocks today. The phrase “dreaming is free” is a great lyric and filled with possibility. This song sounded like the future with its new-wave-y keyboard and the echo-y vocal. Debbie Harry paved the way for Madonna, Gwen Stefani and so many others.

Dream, dream, even for a little while, Dream, dream filling up an idle hour. Fade away, radiate:

Imagine something of your very own, something you can have and hold: -
(Debbie Harry was 63 when this was made. How amazing is that?)
