BIGGER THAN US BY WHITE LIES
Sometimes a pop song comes along that grabs everyone; the kids and the soccer moms all sing along in the SUV while driving to get groceries and all the hipster bands will do their “ironic” covers. Sometimes there’s a pop hit that only the weird girl who reads comics or the too-pretty younger-than-the-rest Mom who smokes likes. This is one of those and I love that something that sounds like this is a hit. It takes a bit of Joy Division/Interpol mixes it with the Editors and a dollop of Depeche Mode. Your older brother would make fun of you for liking this, but you’re not 12 anymore so you don’t have to worry about any of that “cool” shit. Just sit back, listen and go to wherever this totally rad track takes you.
I feel like a lot of the bands today are taking the sonics from the 80’s and doing something right with them. I love this guy’s New Wave voice and I really, really love the melodrama of the music and when it kicks into the chorus, I’m sold (I’m sure Pitchfork absolutely must hate these guys). I haven’t had anything really current in the OMGITLTS posts and this song is pretty popular these days with the kids and I think it’s because of the totally cool video so be sure to check out the first clip. It’s weird in a great way a Top 40 hit.
