Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!

TOP OF THE WORLD BY PATTY GRIFFIN

Ok, two heartbreakers in a row (don’t worry I’m fine). So maybe you know this song because of the Dixie Chicks “The Hours” inspired video? Their version, while great (Natalie Maines sings the shit out of it in a gorgeous way-seriously plug Dixie Chicks Top of the World Live into youtube’s search), isn’t the original. This version is more spare and Patti Griffin’s song about a dead man’s regret is heartbreaking, beautiful and a bit of a nuts-kick. Her quiet delivery both in voice and instrumentation are haunting.
The lyrics are visceral and poetic.  The narrator of the song, a man, has died and realized he may not have been as good a man as he would have liked. If this idea terrifies you as much as I you’ll love this song. If you’ve never heard this song, and you’re the sensitive type, get ready to be just walloped.
I think I broke the wings off that little songbird, she’s never gonna fly to the top of the world:

I wished I’d have known you, wish I’d have shown you all of the things I was on the outside:
