MENSWEAR PARIS FALL SHOWS 2011
I saw a lot of really cool expensive clothes in the shows last week and, for the most part, I liked what I saw. Now if only a bunch of money would drop out of the sky and fall in my lap (in a non-dangerous, non-injuring sorta way). The nice thing about most of the stuff I saw and liked, is that any guy can do a couple things to update the old wardrobe.
Almost every designer showed lace-up boots. Next Fall’s boot is between mid-calf and to-the-knee. I saw rolled up pants with thick socks so the boots were exposed. I figure I’ll buy a pair of Doc Martens or some other affordable approximation of these. The key seemed to be laces and height.
Speaking of Doc Martens, one of my favorite looks was shown at Adam Kimmel. This dude looks like he’s right out of the 90’s Pacific Northwest and the outfit looks like Thrift Store Lumberjack (which backinnaday was one I rocked). Also, I most of this stuff in my wardrobe: printed T, cardigan, pants? Check. So, I need to get some suspenders and boots and watch out, Fall 2011, here I come.

This suit and sweater from Jil Sander, on the other hand, I cannot do at home. But, man, I wish I could. I bet the sweater is cashmere and costs around 800 bucks and the suit is probably some luxe material and costs way more than the sweater. Ah, a boy can dream, can’t he?

What I think it comes down to with clothes and fashion is to look at everything you can and let it sit in your head so that when you do buy something new you can mix something inexpensive that’s on-trend with stuff you already have. The most important thing is to not take it or yourself to seriously. Its just clothes.
Speaking of not taking oneself seriously, I really wonder who’s going to be buying and wearing any of the horrible dog sweatshirts they showed at Givenchy. Paired with shorts and really high boots, this to me is like Crazy Mom Goes Shopping but it will set you back thousands of dollars. But, that being said, most of the time when I really make fun of something, I end up wearing some version of it down the road.

So, yeah, if you see me next Winter wearing a hat with goggle sunglasses in a Wolf sweatshirt with pleated shorts and thigh high Pretty Woman boots, just pretend you think I’m cool.
