RIP Dennis Oppenheim

Device To Root Out Evils

Dennis Oppenheim passed away on January 22 and the world of art mourns his loss. Born in 1938, in Electric City, Washington, he worked in various mediums but I’m most familiar with his large public sculptures.  I love the stuff he did and I hope his legacy of interesting, thought provoking, public art lives on.
Take a look at some of his stuff. The first three for Vancouver and the rest from around the world.  I love the way he puts something so formal, abstract and playful in outdoor settings. Sometimes pieces like this make us smile or even laugh. Sometimes they make us think about our surroundings in a new and different way. Sometimes they just capture our imaginations and make us gasp in child-like wonder.
Dennis Oppenheim put so much thought and precision into his work and the world’s a better place because of it. Rest in peace, Dennis Oppenheim
