Lodestar by Sarah Harmer
If there is a Canon of Canadian Music, this song should be in the top ten. It makes one nostalgic for a nonexistent Northern Ontario summer night that never existed anywhere but our imaginations. I want to be in that canoe with my lover in that great black night with no lodestar in sight. I defy you to not be pulled in by this song’s charms. In twenty years I hope that nerdy/sexy music teachers across the nation have their classes singing this or at least playing it on the recorder. If Cottage Country ever splits off from the rest of the country, they have their anthem.
Her voice is supple and emotive and the song is lush and quiet at first but builds to a gorgeous crescendo. When this song is performed live, the buildup is so intense and loud and just perfect.
The darkness rings, indeed.
