Run, Don't Walk
Part Two
Today I saw 300. I’m way behind the curve on this one, but I thought I’d give it a shout out anyway. Go see it while it’s still on a big screen because I think on DVD it’ll lose some of its grandeur. As far as plot goes, it’s a fairly simple one and I won’t spoil it for you here.
First of all, for anyone who finds half naked men fun to look at, this film is chock-full of ‘em. The Spartan army (our heroes) wear leather Speedos, red capes and a shield. The amount of blush used to tszuj the abs in this movie may have pushed the budget higher and higher. Also, the Greek army that shows up to help are basically just a bunch of leather fags with weapons. And that’s the good guys.
The Big Bad is a hilariously queen-y fella of colour who tries to get our hero to "Kneel in submission" and wears little more than a bathing suit and a lot of bling. I can see how this would be both terrifying and a perfect bad guy for this film’s target audience.
The art direction is superb. The amount of tsuzjing on everything in this film made it that much more enjoyable. Every scene in the movie is gorgeous to look at. Even when there are decapitations, they are beautiful. If more movies used green screen technology this artistically, we wouldn’t end up with the usual Hollywood crap a la "The Day After Tomorrow" or any of those Mummy movies.
The fight scenes are thrilling and exhilarating. The twelve year old boy in me loved seeing the bad guys gutted, sliced and diced. A lot of these battle scenes were done in slow motion which took away their harshness and added a visceral beauty that I didn’t expect. Overall, this movie has a wider appeal than would appear at first glance. I can see the dudes, their girlfriends, and the gays all finding much to enjoy in 300.
