part one
As you may or may not know (or care), I love me some comic books. Now, I know that lots of people think of Archie or Little LuLu or things like that, but there are some great titles out there and so today, I thought I’d try to get some much needed love for one of my favourite things.
Please go to your nearest comic and/or bookstore (some libraries are even carrying these now) and try out these titles. I’m trying to highlight some stuff that isn’t typical spandex reading. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Marvel and DC hero books, but I know they’re not for everyone. The two books below are definitely for those of you who wouldn’t normally think of reading a comic book.
The greatest thing about comics these days is that they are reprinted in storyline-sized chunks in trade paperbacks. The following have collections and if you try just one of them, I bet you’ll be back for more.

When six kids learn that their parents are actually super villains, they band together and run away. Karolina, Gert, Nico, Alex, Chase, and Molly are some of the most well-drawn (both literally by the cartoon-y yet detailed and rich Adrian Alphonso and otherwise) and lovable characters to come along in awhile. Brian K.Vaughn finds each of their unique voices and following their adventures, month after month has been a blast. This is a great all ages read with twists and turns that’ll leave you gasping and wanting more.

This is another title by Brian K. Vaughn (I’ll admit I have a favourite comic book writer) that is at times horrifying, exciting, hilarious, thought-provoking, and moving. The story follows Yorick Brown, a former slacker/magician (which sounds awful but works) who is the last man after a plague instantly and suddenly kills every male on the planet. His main goal throughout the story is getting to Australia to find his fiancĂ© but along with Agent 355 and his pet monkey (which, again, sounds awful but works) he encounters many interesting and engrossing adventures along the way.

Now that I am back in the comics world with the new Buffy series, maybe I will take a look. But I am the type to like the traditional Super Duper Hero Books. So does that mean I won't like these you elitist jerk?
No, you'll totally like these more than the usual.
Actually, the writer of both of these titles is coming on for the second storyline in Season 8 of the Buffy comic. Which I'm enjoying very much.
Wow. Okay so maybe I'll read it. are you going to get a cut of the profits for this? You should. so why is it that I always capitalize "Owen" but this blog doesn't register that? is it a deliberate slight? it better not be or there will be some drama. did you see alanis' My Humps video? Funny.
